Bolivia - Stretching across approximately 4,000 square miles, Bolivia’s Salar de Uyuni is the world’s largest salt flat. According to the legend of the indigenous people of the region, the Aymara, the Salar was formed by the goddess Tunupa who cried salty tears while feeding her son. Those tears pooled to form the flats. Scientifically, however, the Salar used to be part of a massive prehistoric lake that eventually split into smaller lakes. One of those lakes dried up and formed the flats. While the Salar might not be a giant lake anymore, during the wet season, water flows into it and creates a very shallow body of water that acts like a mirror that reflects the sky. Should you wish to ever visit the Salar, you can also treat yourself to a night in one of three hotels made of salt located just outside the flats.:
