Chile - If you’ve read Daniel Defoe’s novel and imagined yourself on a deserted island, you’re not alone. But don’t just leave it to the imagination: Robinson Crusoe Island exists in real life. Also called Desert Island, the deserted Chilean isle is the second largest in the Juan Fernández Archipelago in the South Pacific. Thought to be the inspiration behind Defoe’s novel, the island did serve as the accidental home for real-life Scottish Royal Navy officer, Alexander Selkirk. Selkirk was marooned on the then-uninhabited island for four years in the early 18th century where, like Crusoe, he adapted to nature, hunting and farming the island’s resources. When his rescuers arrived there in 1709, he aided them by capturing goats to feed those suffering from scurvy. The ship’s captain referred to Selkirk as “the governor of the island.” Although Defoe placed his fictional character in the Caribbean, the survival story Selkirk lent itself to fictionalization and, in 1966, the Chilean government officially renamed the island to reflect its literary lore.:
