Step 1 : Introduction to the question "What crisis did Joseph's family face?"
...Joseph's family suffered through a famine that affected northern Africa, the Middle East, and possibly even parts of southern Europe. Through Joseph, God revealed to Pharaoh that seven years of plenty would be followed by seven years of famine: "The famine will consume the land, and the plenty will be unknown in the land… for the famine… will be very severe" (Genesis 41:30-31). Joseph suggested that Pharaoh capitalize on the years of plenty and store up grain as a reserve for the years of famine. Pharaoh ended up putting Joseph in charge of that, and he "stored up grain in great abundance, like the sand of the sea, until he ceased to measure it, for it could not be measured" (Genesis 41:49). When the famine spread, and the people in Egypt were famished, they came to Joseph and bought the grain from him. In fact, people from surrounding areas also traveled to Egypt to buy food, including Joseph's own brothers, who lived in Canaan.
