The town itself was named for the 16th-century bridge, which is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. And for good reason: The simple, gorgeous stone arch stretches over the valley of the Neretva River with fortified towers on either side, a spectacular technological achievement of the Ottoman era. It symbolized the religious harmony that prospered in this area between Muslims, Christians, and Jews. However, the bridge you can cross today is actually a reconstruction of the original, which was destroyed in the Bosnian War of the 1990s, along with much of the historic town. The bridge was rebuilt in 2004 with the help of UNESCO. Mostar comes from the name “mostari,” meaning “bridge keepers.”:
