The original Catholic church on this site was built in the 11th century and became Lutheran during the Reformation; it was later rebuilt in the 18th century in the striking Baroque style. But that structure was destroyed during the bombing of Dresden in World War II, along with many other historic buildings, and the church’s ruins lay mostly untouched for nearly 40 years. In the 1980s, the site was used in the East German peace movement, and after Germany was united, restoration of the historic church began in 1994. Builders were able to use the original blueprints from the 1700s to recreate the Baroque style, and the church was reconsecrated in 2005.:
