Córdoba - One of the most famous houses of worship in the world, the Mosque-Cathedral of Córdoba is a symbol of Southern Spain's fascinating history. Its official name is the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption, a place of Roman Catholic worship, but that wasn’t always the case. Traditional accounts state that a Roman temple originally stood on the site, but after the Moors took control of this area from the Christians in the early 700s, Emir Abd al-Rahman ordered construction of a new mosque, which was finally completed in 987 AD. Then, in 1236, King Ferdinand III of Castile conquered Córdoba. He turned the mosque into a Catholic cathedral but never demolished it; instead, over the next several centuries Christians added to the structure, resulting in the hybrid house of worship that exists today.:
