Emperor Charles IV began construction on the site of a 10th century Roman rotunda in 1344. Over the following years, portions of the cathedral were completed in Gothic and neo-Gothic style, with additional Renaissance and baroque details added later. But it took until the Czech National Revival in 1861 for a renewed push to finally finish construction, and the church was consecrated in 1929. Today the St. Vitus Cathedral is the largest church in Prague and the city’s spiritual heart, standing as the centerpiece of Prague Castle complex on a hilltop overlooking the city.:
