Step 2 : Answer to the question "Where is this medieval clifftop castle?"
Stonehaven, Scotland - How’s this for a castle with a view? Dunnottar Castle looks out over the North Sea from atop the cliffs of Stonehaven, Scotland, a fixture of the area’s rugged landscape since the Pictish period between 5,000 BC and 700 AD. It’s unknown when exactly the fortress was first established here, but the Picts worshipped nature spirits and chose the site because they believed it represented the feminine nature of the “green lady.” The Vikings destroyed the castle during the 9th century, but it was reconfigured for the Earls Marischal, one of Scotland’s powerful ruling families, in the 15th century. Perhaps most famously, the castle was where the Honours of Scotland (the Scottish crown jewels) were hidden from Oliver Cromwell’s invasion in the 17th century. Today you can still visit the castle ruins, most of which are from the 15th and 16th centuries. :
