In both films, the actors played each other’s romantic interest. Jones first became involved with Rodgers and Hammerstein stage productions in an open casting call during a short trip in New York. She sang for the casting director, who ran to grab Rodgers from across the street where he was rehearsing “Oklahoma!” with the orchestra. He then called Hammerstein, and they decided to make Jones the first and only person they ever put under personal contract to the musical songwriting team.:
