...Junko Tabei hailed from Miharu, Japan, in 1939. While growing up, she took part in a classroom mountain-climbing expedition. This ignited in her an unquenchable passion for mountaineering. She would go on to become the first woman to reach the summit of Mt. Everest, a historic accomplishment she achieved May 16, 1975. Before her death in October of 2016, she would go on to become the first woman to reach the summit of each of the highest mountains on the seven continents, known as the Seven Summits.
