However, there was a quite specific reason: By the late 1800s, around 20 percent of autopsies on Icelanders showed infections of echinococcosis, which comes from a tapeworm that dogs can pass to humans. The law was passed to stave off infections of the disease, which was (and still is) extremely difficult to treat. Dogs are no longer illegal, but are sparse because residents can only have them with strict requirements.
