Lyndon B. Johnson - Thurgood Marshall joined the Supreme Court bench in 1967, making him the first Black justice to serve in the nation’s highest court. He was appointed by President Lyndon B. Johnson, who had previously named Marshall solicitor general in 1965. During his long career, Marshall worked as the chief counsel for the NAACP, litigated in the landmark Brown v. Board of Education, and appeared in front of the Supreme Court 32 times. (He won 29 of his 32 Supreme Court cases.) Marshall served on the Supreme Court for 24 years.:
