But it was Rhode Island that led the way two months earlier, on May 4, by becoming the first colony to renounce loyalty to King George III. Rhode Island was a major trade center during the 18th century with ports at Newport and Providence, and merchants became increasingly happy with the British stronghold on commerce, taxes, and trade regulations. Rhode Islanders kept their rebellious streak even after the Revolutionary War ended; they were the last to ratify the new Constitution, as they considered remaining independent to secure their finances against taxation from the United States. But the United States would have then sanctioned Rhode Island as a foreign country, so in the end Rhode Island ratified the Constitution in 1790.:
