The stupa (a spherical structure devoted to meditation) was built sometime in the 14th century along an important Nepalese trade route, which allowed it to draw many possible converts passing through the area. In the 1950s, it became an important center of Tibetan Buddhism after scores of Chinese refugees emigrated to Kathmandu. The eyes painted on the tower that sits on top of the stupa are said to represent the all-knowing nature of Buddha. It’s one of the largest stupas in Nepal and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.:
