In fact, it’s estimated that nearly 40 percent of U.S. citizens can trace at least one of their ancestors to the Ellis Island Registration Building. The former immigration inspection station processed a staggering 12 million immigrants entering the United States between 1892 and 1954. It was closed in November 1954 due to rising costs and later fell into disrepair. Many projects were proposed for the island, but in 1964, the National Park Service gained approval to turn the island into a national monument. Today you can tour Ellis Island and the nearby Statue of Liberty.:
