Florida - Spanish explorer Ponce de León led the first known European expedition to Florida, and this luxury hotel in America’s oldest city, St. Augustine, still bears his name. Originally built in 1888, the Ponce de León Hotel is a stunning example of Belle Époque architecture — fitted with Austrian crystal chandeliers, Tiffany stained-glass windows, a dazzling painted rotunda, and a unique courtyard fountain that acts as a sundial. Built by railroad and oil tycoon Henry M. Flagler, the 5-star hotel even had electricity upon opening, which was extremely rare at the time. The Ponce no longer welcomes hotel guests (it is now the centerpiece of Flagler College), but in its heyday served such dignitaries as the Rockefellers, the Vanderbilts, Theodore Roosevelt, Ernest Hemingway, and Mark Twain. And if the ghost stories surrounding the hotel are to be believed, some of these guests may have overstayed their welcome.:
