Mexico - In 2018, divers with the Great Maya Aquifer Project found an underwater connection between two previously known flooded caves, bringing to light a 216-mile labyrinth now known as the Sac Actun cave system. The caves are located near the coastline of Mexico’s Yucatán peninsula, with the subsurface connection not far from Tulum. Together, they are the largest flooded cavern on Earth. To make things even more fascinating, the cave system is filled with Mayan relics, as well as previously known plant and animal species. It’s far from the first time something amazing has been discovered in the area: In 2014, divers exploring one of the caverns found the oldest known human skeleton in the New World. :
