Both are endemic to Australia, although the echidna, which resembles a spiny anteater, can also be found in parts of New Guinea. The platypus has a number of unique features that allow it to thrive both underwater and on land. Every other mammal gives birth to live young, but the fact that both the echidna and the platypus have hair and feed their offspring milk qualifies them as mammals. In 1992, scientists discovered a fossilized tooth of the Patagonian Platypus that was estimated to live in South America between 61 and 63 million years ago before going extinct. :
