Five years later, the Jesuit missionary Francis Xavier introduced Christianity to the Japanese; along with a stream of missionaries, trade prospered between the two countries over the next century. The Portuguese were known as the “nanban” (southern barbarians) since they arrived from the South, bringing with them gold, silk, and wool textiles, and trading them for Japanese swords, silver, and lacquerwares. Japan banned Christian missionaries in 1641, and the Portuguese were largely replaced by the Dutch as Japan’s European trading partners after that.:
