Apparently in 1933, by adding a gnome with a baker's hat to your cereal box and naming him 'Snap.' The concept was so successful, Snap was joined by fellow cereal-eating gnomes Crackle and Pop in print ads in the years following, with all three appearing on the box by 1939. Other cereal mascots soon followed, with Tony the Tiger appearing in 1951, Toucan Sam flying in around 1963, and Cap'n Crunch joining the ranks shortly after. The '70s brought about a whole new set of cereal mascots themed after monsters, like Count Chocula and Boo Berry. The characters were designed to feel similar to the same cartoons kids loved watching, helping to catch their attention so they'd ask their parents for the sugary cereal in the grocery aisle.:
