The other helmers in the category were Denis Villeneuve for “Arrival,” Mel Gibson for “Hacksaw Ridge,” Kenneth Lonergan for “Manchester by the Sea,” and Barry Jenkins for “Moonlight.” Chazelle broke an 85-year-old record that had been held by Norman Taurog, who won the award in 1931 for his comedy, “Skippy.” Taurog was 221 days older than Chazelle, who is only the second director to win an Oscar for an original musical. The first was Vincente Minnelli for “Gigi” (1958).:
