After the Greek deity Atlas - In Greek mythology, Atlas was one of a family of giants, called Titans, who ruled the earth before being overthrown in battle by the Olympian gods. After his defeat, Titan was forced to carry the heavens on his shoulders. In the 16th century, the Flemish mapmaker Gerardus Mercator chose an image of Atlas to illustrate the title page in his collection of maps.
