Step 1 : Introduction to the question "In the early days of their wanderings, what did the children of Israel crave from Egypt?"
...As the Israelites wandered the desert after escaping enslavement, they began to cry for their oppressors' food. Their inability or refusal to accept the truths of their enslavement was a profound indication of their disbelieving and rebellious hearts. As they murmured and complained, they said, "If only we had meat to eat! We remember the fish we ate in Egypt at no cost — also the cucumbers, melons, leeks, onions, and garlic. But now we have lost our appetite; we never see anything but this manna!" What an insult to their God who had parted the Red Sea, permitting them to cross over to the other side to escape their enslavement, and provided the manna to sustain them. It was as if they forgot that being an enslaved people did cost them. It especially cost them time spent with and the knowledge of their God. This early rumbling began the Israelites' cycle of rebellion and disbelief that would become the hallmark of their 40 years of wanderings. And would eventually prevent all but a few from entering into the promised land.
