McConnell was a traveling book salesman that used to offer hand-mixed perfume samples as an incentive for women to purchase his books. He soon realized that the perfume was the real draw, and pivoted. McConnell continued mixing fragrances himself and recruited a team of female sales representatives that were his best customers — a radical business model for the late 1800s when economic independence for women was a foreign concept. By 1887, McConnell had 13 sales reps; a little over a decade later that number had soared to 5,000, positioning Avon (then known as the California Perfume Company; it changed its name to Avon in 1937) as a global leader in female entrepreneurship.:
