Porto, Portugal - While Carmo and Carmelitas Churches appear to be one continuous structure, look closely: They are indeed two churches that are separated by a tiny house measuring just one meter wide. The famous churches in downtown Porto, Portugal, were built at different times. Carmelitas, on the left, was completed in 1628 to house an order of Carmelite nuns. Carmo, on the right, was completed in 1768 for an order of Carmelite monks. Since a local law stated no two churches could share a wall, the hidden house was built to separate the monks from the nuns. That tiny house was actually occupied until the 1980s, and it’s open for tours today.:
