Turkey - Myra was an ancient Greek town in the region known as Lycia, situated on the southern coast of present-day Turkey. The intricate tombs of the Myra Necropolis were carved from the rock cliffs as early as the 4th century BC. Once colorfully painted, the tombs feature remarkable details, such as the “Lion Tomb” with a life-sized stone lion, bull, and human figures thought to represent the grave owner’s family. The ruins at Myra also reveal a once-prosperous ancient settlement, including a 13,000-seat Greco-Roman theater, also carved from the rock, as well as the Church of St. Nicholas, built to honor the gift-giving bishop who partly inspired the modern Santa Claus.:
