Alabama - Built in 1940 and spanning 250 feet, the Edmund Pettus Bridge crosses the Alabama River in Selma, Alabama. In March 1965, it was the site of a physical clash between civil rights demonstrators and Alabama State Troopers named Bloody Sunday. One of those demonstrators was John Lewis, who would go on to serve as U.S. congressman for more than 30 years and passed away earlier this year. In recent years, many have petitioned for the bridge to be renamed to honor the civil rights movement and Congressman Lewis, as the bridge’s current namesake, Edmund Pettus, was an officer in the Confederate Army, a leader of the KKK, and a U.S. Senator. The bridge was declared a National Historic Landmark in 2013.:
