France - This whimsical “palace” created out of rocks is located in the small town of Hauterives in southeastern France. Named Le Palais Ideál, the one-of-a-kind structure was built by Ferdinand Cheval, a local postal worker. Cheval was inspired by the many unique shaped rocks found in the region — which was once underwater and rich in limestone and fossils as a result — and he began collecting them while delivering mail. Eventually, the fascination grew to the point that Cheval was using a wheelbarrow to collect them along his route and was inspired to design a building out of them in 1888. It took a full 34 years to collect enough rocks to build Palais Ideál. Despite the fact that Cheval had no formal schooling in architecture or masonry, he managed to create this architectural marvel, which is visited by 120,000 people each year.:
