Pennsylvania - The McDonald’s family started their restaurants in California, and Ray Kroc took the company nationwide in the 1950s. But its most famous burger, the Big Mac, was a Pennsylvania creation. In 1965, franchisee Jim Delligatti decided he wanted to serve a bigger burger. He added the third bun, which was crucial to maintaining the structural integrity of the burger’s extra toppings, and convinced McDonald’s to let him start serving it at his franchise in Uniontown, outside of Pittsburgh, in 1967. Two years later, McDonald’s took his creation nationwide. Delligatti owned dozens of McDonald’s franchises, and today his son Mike Delligatti still operates 20 franchises. In 2007, Mike opened the Big Mac Museum at his New Huntingdon location. It celebrates the burger’s 50-year history and features a 12-foot replica of a Big Mac.:
