The brothers' innovations included a self-serve counter, an assembly line, and pre-making items that were kept warm under heat lamps, all with the aim of serving food more quickly and cheaply. It was this approach that caught the attention of Ray Kroc, a milkshake machine salesman. Kroc opened his first McDonald's franchise in Des Plaines, Illinois, in 1955, and later bought the company from the brothers in 1961. In fact, the McDonald brothers ended up losing the rights to their own name, forcing them to eventually rebrand as “The Big M” before going out of business in 1972.
