South Dakota - The Crazy Horse Memorial in the Black Hills of South Dakota will be by far the world’s largest sculpture once it’s finished. But more than 70 years after work began, the monument still has a long way to go. The history of the Crazy Horse Memorial dates back to Mount Rushmore, which was built in 1927 on Lakota Native American lands. In response, Chief Henry Standing Bear petitioned Polish-American sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski (who assisted on Mount Rushmore) to carve a memorial dedicated to the 19th-century war leader who fought against the U.S. government and died in the Black Hills War. Crazy Horse's face alone is 87 feet tall (comparatively, Rushmore’s George Washington profile is 60 feet), while the entirety of the memorial will be 563 feet by 641 feet. Although Ziolkowski passed away in 1982, work on the Crazy Horse Memorial continues to this day.:
