Legend has it that long ago, the Buddha gave a hermit a strand of his own hair, which the hermit then gave to his king. In return, the king gave the hermit a boulder shaped like his head, which he pulled from the ocean using magic. Afterward, the king constructed the pagoda to enshrine the Buddha’s hair — and at some point Buddhist devotees painted the entire thing gold. Many pilgrims visit during the Full Moon day of Tabaung in March, when 90,000 candles are lit at the Golden Rock.:
