Guatemala - The Mayan ruins of Tikal were once home to a thriving civilization, but the site was largely abandoned by the 10th century. Located in the northeastern part of present-day Guatemala, near the borders of Mexico and Belize, the site was first occupied as a small village as far back as 900 B.C. Tikal later became an important Mayan ceremonial center; its remarkable pyramids, palaces, and temples were mostly built between 600-900 A.D. Like the Egyptian pyramids, they feature many hieroglyphs and carvings. The city’s decline remains somewhat of a mystery, and Tikal eventually became lost in the surrounding rainforest until it was rediscovered in the mid-19th century. It became a national park in the 1950s and a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1979.:
