But the town has had a special relationship with Mexico since the 19th century, when its local textile industry started trading with Mexico, and thousands of residents of the Ubaye Valley emigrated to the country. By the end of the 19th century, they were responsible for some 70% of the Mexican textile trade. Some returned to Barcelonnette, building ornate “maisons mexicaines” (Mexican houses) with their newfound wealth, but an estimated 60,000 descendants of the Ubaye Valley still live in Mexico to this day. The annual FΓͺtes Latino-Mexicaines celebrates this history in Barcelonnette each August with music, dancing, costumes, and parades.:
