Yet, one can only imagine what the outcome might have been if Reuben had stood against the entire plan and protected his brother as the elder of the 12. We will never know, but in the subsequent years after God elevated Joseph to a powerful position, second only to the Pharaoh in Egypt, he told Reuben and the others, “as for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good…” Genesis 50:20
