Ljubljana, Slovenia - The Slovenian capital city of Ljubljana has long claimed the dragon as its symbol — you can even attend an annual Dragon Festival here in the self-proclaimed City of Dragons. According to legend, Ljubljana was founded by Greek mythological hero Jason and the Argonauts after they fled Greece. Jason was said to slay a dragon in a lake near the source of the Ljubljanica River. The dragon later became a symbol of protection for the city, appearing on a medieval coat of arms and the city’s flag. When plans were made for a new bridge crossing the Ljubljanica River in 1900, the bridge’s architect originally envisioned winged lion statues on either end. These were later replaced by dragons, and the bridge was renamed the Dragon Bridge for the city’s symbolic protector in 1919. :
