Ethiopia - These striking monolithic cave churches are located in Lalibela, a pilgrimage site for Ethiopian Christians located in the country's northern Amhara region. They were carved in the 13th century straight from solid rock, with workers chiseling doors, windows, and columns out of the stone. The 11 churches, all below ground level, are linked via subterranean passageways, which also lead to catacombs and hermit caves. One of the buildings, Biete Medhani Alem, is said to be the largest monolithic church in the world. The creation of the churches is traditionally attributed to King Lalibela, who set out to construct a “New Jerusalem” after Muslim conquests made the holy land inaccessible. In the 20th century, restoration work uncovered evidence that some of the churches may also have been used as royal residences and fortifications. They have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1978.:
