Estonia - One of the oldest lighthouses in the world can be found on Hiiumaa, the second-largest island in Estonia. Known for its distinctive pyramid base, Kõpu Lighthouse was built in the early 16th century by the Hanseatic League — a regional alliance of North German cities and towns — to guide ships following a key east-west trade route through the shallow waters near the island. For decades, Hanseatic merchants had been asking for some kind of landmark that would help stop ships getting lost at sea. The lighthouse has been in continuous use since 1531, and a renovation took place in 1845. The beacon itself was automated in 1963. Kõpu still serves as an important tourist attraction for the area, with a cafe and summer concerts on the lawn, and it's even appeared on a postage stamp.:
