The story was penned by Washington Irving (who also gave us “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” among other works), and was first published in Irving’s collection “The Sketch Book” in 1819–20. In the tale, Rip Van Winkle is a work-averse Hudson Valley farmer in the late 1700s who happens upon a group of odd men wearing old-fashioned Dutch clothing and playing ninepins (bowling) in the mountains. The strange men offer him a drink, which he accepts — and then he falls asleep for 20 years. When Van Winkle wakes, the mysterious men are long gone, he’s grown a long white beard, and once he gets back to town he sees that George Washington’s picture hangs where King George III’s once did. Both Rip Van Winkle and the townspeople are greatly confused, until the oldest villager explains that the ghosts of Henry Hudson’s (Hendrick Hudson’s in the story) men have caused mischief in the mountains near the Hudson River for years.:
