The Empty State Building - In 1929, New York real estate developers were in a race to build the tallest building in the world. And so began the design and construction of the Empire State Building. The skyscraper was intended for corporate offices, but its timing couldn’t have been worse. Filling the vacancies proved extremely difficult due to the stock market crash that year and the ensuing Great Depression. That resulted in its not so complimentary nickname: “the Empty State Building.” When it opened in 1931, less than a quarter of the skyscraper’s retail space had been rented out. By the late 1930s, most of the upper half of the building still remained vacant. The owners kept the lights on in these upper floors so they’d appear occupied, but it took until World War II for the building to finally turn a profit.:
