Colombia - About 50 miles outside of Medellín, Colombia, you’ll come across a 10-million-ton granite monolith that dominates the surrounding landscape. And you can actually climb your way to the top of it — via one of the world’s most unique staircases. Piedra del Peñol (also called El Peñon de Guatape) was once worshipped by the Tahamies indigenous peoples. In the 1950s, a group of visitors spent five days climbing to the top of the massive rock using a wooden board to ascend up the rock’s long crack along its side. Afterward, a staircase with 649 steps was built into the crack, lacing up the side of the monolith like a corset. From the top, visitors can get a bird’s eye view of the Guatape hydroelectric dam and the series of lakes it created.:
