Maryland - The oyster industry in Maryland's Chesapeake Bay dates back to 1839, when the first commercial harvest took in an estimated 700,000 bushels. By the 1880s, that number had grown to more than 15 million bushels each year. However, production has decreased significantly in recent years, shrinking back down to around 900,000 bushels due to noxious diseases and overfishing. In order to counter that, the state of Maryland — in collaboration with the Army Corps, the Nature Conservancy, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration — built the largest manmade oyster reef in the world in 2017. Covering 330 acres on the Eastern Shore, the no-fishing zone is home to more than one billion oysters. :
