She is traveling with her mother and her fiance. Cal is the son of a well connected steel tycoon but Rose does not love him. Rose considers ending her life by throwing herself over the side but is rescued by a 3rd class passenger, Jack Dawson. The two fall in love and secretly spend time in one another's arms. They are together when the ship strikes the iceberg. Jack saves the life of Rose by lifting her onto floating debris before he himself succumbs to an icy grave beneath the waves.
