Greece - One of the largest villages on the Greek island of Chios, Pyrgi, is known as the “Painted Village” because of the gray-and-white, geometrical patterns that grace many of its buildings. The patterns, known locally as xysta, date back centuries and are considered part of local tradition. Pyrgi may have been established well before the 10th century, and its narrow, winding streets were built to confuse pirate raiders. The village is the traditional seat of the mastichochoria (“mastic villages”), which are devoted to the production of a natural resin called mastic. The southern part of the island of Chios is the only place in the world where resin weeps from the mastic tree (Pistacia lentiscus). Once solidified, the nuggets are prized for their culinary and therapeutic value.:
