Israel - Nimrod Fortress is the largest castle in Israel remaining from the Middle Ages. It was built by the Ayyubid dynasty around 1230 on a hill near Mount Hermon overlooking the plateau of Golan Heights. The fortress fell to the Mongols in 1260, then quickly fell again to Mamluk general Baibars. Under Baibars, the fortress was expanded and rebuilt with additional towers. Crusaders were pushed out of the area in 1291, and Nimrod Fortress was mostly abandoned. Today, the castle ruins are part of Nimrod Fortress National Park.:
