The city named the pink flamingo — the plastic version, not the actual bird — as its official state bird in 2009. Wondering why? It all started with a prank: In 1979, members of the student government at the University of Wisconsin-Madison planted more than 1,000 pink plastic flamingos on the lawn outside the dean’s office. To honor that feat as part of the city’s quirky history, a newspaper columnist lobbied in 2009 to adopt the plastic flamingo as the Madison's official bird. The city council overwhelmingly passed the bill, and the Wisconsin Historical Society has even archived one of the birds for posterity. :
