John Tyler - The 10th President of the United States, John Tyler, purchased a stately Virginia home and its surrounding 1,600 acres in 1842. Although the land was originally called Smith's Hundred, Tyler renamed it Sherwood Forest, reportedly because he considered himself a political outlaw. (The "real" Sherwood Forest is a woodland in Nottinghamshire, England, famous as the home of legendary folk hero and political outlaw Robin Hood.) Tyler expanded the home in 1845 by adding a 68-foot ballroom, with plenty of room for the most popular dance at the time - the Virginia Reel. Tyler lived at Sherwood Forest until his death in 1862, and the house still belongs to his family. The Sherwood Forest house itself is believed to be the longest frame house in America, and remains open for tours by appointment.:
