Los Angeles, California - Composed of 17 interconnected sculptural towers, the Watts Towers Arts Center in Los Angeles is a unique work of architecture created by Italian-American artist, Sabato “Simon” Rodia. Rodia worked on the towers for 33 years, using rods, steel pipes, wire mesh, ceramic tiles, glass, porcelain, and mortar, in addition to found objects such as seashells, scrap metal, bottles, and even bed frames to build the spires and mosaics on the property. Many of these objects were acquired from his long-time studio, Malibu Pottery, but children in the neighborhood also were known to deliver pieces to help him build his masterpiece. Calling his artwork “Nuestro Pueblo,” meaning “Our Town,” Rodia created his towers with nothing but hand tools and window-washing equipment. The towers were completed in 1954 and have been designated a National Historic Landmark.:
