The flock on Telegraph Hill has been there since around 1990, when a pair of cherry-headed conures (a parrot species) either escaped or were released into the wild. Though originally from Ecuador and Peru, the parrots have found the San Francisco trees to their liking, particularly the date palms. Over the years, mitred conures have joined the red-headed birds, and the two parrot species have interbred to create a colorful, noisy flock that numbers in the hundreds.
