Noctilucent - Both cirrus and cumulous clouds can reach tremendous heights, but the highest clouds in Earth's atmosphere are called noctilucent (“night-shining”) clouds. These lacy, iridescent patterns of ice crystals sometimes appear at twilight more than 50 miles above the surface of the Earth, at the very edge of space. (In comparison, the average rain cloud forms about 1.2 miles above the ground.) Because they’re so high up, noctilucent clouds reflect light even after the sun has set. However, they’re only visible on clear evenings between late May and late August at latitudes of about 40–80 degrees north. For reasons that aren’t fully understood, they’ve begun to shine more brightly and appear at lower latitudes in recent years, which means they’re likely to become more visible to more people in the future.:
