These lacy, iridescent patterns of ice crystals sometimes appear at twilight more than 50 miles above the surface of the Earth, at the very edge of space. (In comparison, the average rain cloud forms about 1.2 miles above the ground.) Because they’re so high up, noctilucent clouds reflect light even after the sun has set.
